Drink driving — the facts

The numbers behind the message.

Alcohol affects everyone differently. Age, gender, body weight, food, medication, fatigue and individual metabolism all influence how alcohol affects a person and how long it stays in their system.

Alcohol affects driving ability long before somebody feels drunk.

Even small amounts of alcohol can impair:

  • Reaction time
  • Concentration
  • Decision-making
  • Judgement
  • Coordination
  • Hazard perception

Alcohol can also create a false sense of confidence, leading people to take risks they might otherwise avoid. Driving requires constant attention and quick decision-making. Alcohol reduces both.
